In an effort to bring attention to the continuing pressures facing women and girls at the hands of the media, the Smith College Club of Maine is hosting a screening of the documentary film, Miss Representation, at 2pm on Sunday, January 29th at Catherine McAuley High School, 631 Stevens Ave., Portland. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Miss Representation is written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. The film had its broadcast premiere on OWN Oprah Winfrey Network on October 20, 2011. http://www.missrepresentation. Rebecca Rundquist ’89, who is spearheading this effort, was compelled to bring the documentary to Portland in an effort to provide the community with an opportunity for thoughtful discussion around issues concerning women/girls, sexuality, and the media. A panel and discussion will be held following the screening. Though the screening is being offered to students free of charge, a suggested donation of $5 is being collected. For more information about the film itself, visit www.missrepresentation.org. For more information about the screening, please contact Rebecca Rundquist at rebquist@hotmail.com or at (207) 712-6430 McAuley Honor Roll Announced!January 19th, 2012

On January 11, 2012, three Catherine McAuley students were welcomed at the State House in Augusta in honor of their achievements during the 2011 regular softball season. McAuley sophomores, Heather Chapman and Samantha Libby, as well as freshman, Taylor Whaley, played for the Gray-New Gloucester Senior Softball Team, and were honored with a special legislative sentiment in recognition of being undefeated during the regular 2011 season, for winning the state tournament, and for progressing to the regional tournament, making it within two games of the World Series. Chapman, Libby, and Whaley were also part of this same team that won the 2010 Junior Little League State Championship. These three talented young women will be sure to lead their McAuley Softball Team to great success this coming season. Way to go, ladies!!
