Fine Arts - Music

“Music is an art form whose medium is sound” (Wikipedia).

Music serves as art and, therefore, needs to reach into the heart and soul of an individual in such a profound way that sound is transformed into emotion.  At Catherine McAuley High School, we are privileged to offer musical opportunities that will be foundational for students who seek a college-preparatory course.  Excellence is sought in music theory, performance, and historical knowledge, so as to create leaders who are comfortable using their musical gifts to offer the listener a chance to be moved.

Three areas of music are explored in the Music Department:

1.  Music theory.  One cannot expect to be considered a true musician without basic knowledge of notes, rhythms, scales, and other fundamental skills.  Proficiency in music transcription and penmanship is expected, which helps each student further her zeal for music.

2.  Music performance.  McAuley seeks to train students to overcome certain on-stage fears and become strong musicians who are confident in performance.  To foster such poise, students will participate in on-stage presentations several times during the year.

3.  Music history.  Throughout the last five thousand years of civilized music history, there have been innovators who have been foundational to the way music is performed and understood today.  From King David in the Bible – who sang and danced in worship of God – to Bach, who perfected the art of improvisation, students investigate the historical impact of these remarkable musicians.

Catherine McAuley High School’s Music Department wants students to ultimately experience music as an art form – to grow in confidence, skill and ability as a student, musician, and performer.
