Career Exploration & Self Assessment
Self-knowledge is the first step in the career planning process. There are many activities designed to allow students to gain information about themselves in order to begin exploring occupations that blend their interests, skills, and work and personal values. Through this process, students not only learn about themselves, but also develop a model for critical decision-making.
The Guidance Department provides several opportunities to support you in this process.
- The CHOICES program is available to all McAuley students and parents. This program includes several activities that can be completed individually and then merged to create a comprehensive Career Portfolio. To access, click on the link or go to www.access.bridges.com. Specific sign-on directions are available in the Guidance Office and in the Guidance section of McAuley Online.
- ACT EXPLORE and PLAN tests, which are administered in the freshman and sophomore years, provide valuable insight into skills and interests.
- Career Choice - Each semester, women of the McAuley Community, our alumnae, or other prominent professionals, are invited to share their high school, college, and career paths with McAuley sophomores. These guest speakers offer insight into setting goals, career exploration, and job opportunities, encouraging McAuley students to explore their own future objectives and career aspirations.
- Career Study - Career Study is a self-directed, career-oriented learning experience. This required career immersion allows juniors to take responsibility for their own educational objectives. At the end of Career Study, students have gained powerful insight into the working world, resulting in the growth of self-knowledge and life decision-making skills.
- Senior Service Week (SSW) - McAuley's Senior Service Week is a self-directed experience based on the third component of Catherine McAuley's philosophy, "...service to the Church and the world-wide human community". This opportunity allows seniors to validate her concern for others' needs and assume responsibility for the world in which she lives, via the gift of herself, her time, and her talents.
