Placement Tests

Placement Exam: The Placement Test is administered at McAuley. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. This test is used to see where students’ skill levels are for placement purposes. McAuley uses the High School Placement Test (HSPT) by Scholastic Testing Service (STS).

The High School Placement Test provides measures in the major skill areas, as well as in the cognitive skill area. These areas include Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics and Language. It is administered in approximately three hours, which includes distribution of test materials and filling in the biographical areas. There are 298 items on the test, 112 of which form the cognitive skills section. It is a standardized test and compares a population of other entering high school students. It is used for placement in our classes once the student has been accepted to Catherine McAuley High School.

Students should come to the main entrance before 8:15a.m. A $20 test fee is payable on the day of testing. Pencils will be provided. The Math Department has requested that calculators not be used on the test. There are three dates that students are able to take the placement exam:October 30 and December 4, 2010, and January 8, 2011 .  Please register for an exam date by calling the Office of Admissions.

Students who take the October 30 placement exam receive a $300 tuition break. The highest score on this exam receives our President ’s Scholarship of $1000 dollars.

The two following scholarships are associated with the High School Placement Test:

Academic Excellence Scholarship
Full tuition for four years, the Academic Excellence Scholarship is for the 8th grade student who has shown academic excellence by being the top ranking student who has taken the HSPT and has ranked in the 97 percentile or higher nationally. This student will be awarded full tuition for the four years she attends Catherine McAuley High School. Qualification for the first year has been based upon your daughter’s scoring on the High School Placement Test (HSPT) by Scholastic Testing Service (STS). Subsequent year’s funding will require the attainment of an annual grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 or better.
President’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence
The President’s Scholarship is for the 8th grade student who has shown academic excellence by achieving the highest composite score in the HSPT placement exam given in October. The scholarship award of $1000 annually is dependent upon maintaining honor roll status each year.
