Planned Giving

Please take the time to review your financial situation. Do you have a will? Wills are made not in preparation for death but to provide in the very best way for the living. If you have a will, review it to see if you need to make changes because of births, deaths, divorce, new interests. Have you remembered Catherine McAuley High School in your will? A charitable gift through your will may help to lessen the amount of estate tax that will have to be paid at your death.

At this stage of your life, do you have a summer home at the lake or ocean that you no longer need? Or are you thinking of selling your home and moving into a condo or senior citizen complex? You may hesitate to sell because of the great appreciation in property value, which means a high capital gains tax. Why not consider an estate plan that will benefit you and Catherine McAuley High School? By transferring the property to a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT), you will avoid the capital gains tax, receive a charitable deduction on your income taxes, and also will receive an income for life. An example of the difference between your possible income: CRT annual income $19,163; sold by you and reinvested annual income $5,806. A donor who is concerned about leaving money to their loved ones may have extra dollars to pay the premium on an insurance policy that will replenish the assets.

Ways to Give

1) Bequests

Specific Bequest: "I give and bequeath to Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME, or the institution succeeding to the interests thereof, by whatsoever name known, the sum of _______dollars ($________)/_________percentage of estate, in honor of/in memory of ________."
Bequest to Endowment: "I give and bequeath to Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME or the institution succeeding to the interest thereof, by whatsoever name known, the sum of $________dollars ($___________/______________percentage of estate to be added to the endowment fund of the School and in honor of/memory of ________________________.
Residuary Bequest: "All the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, wherever situated and however and whenever acquired, I give, devise and bequeath to Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME or the institution succeeding to the interest thereof, by whatsoever name known and in honor of/memory of ______________________."
Bequest of Contingent Interest: "If, upon the happening of any contingency, any part or all of my estate shall be undisposed of pursuant to the foregoing provision of this, my will, I give, devise and bequeath such undisposed property to Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME, or the institution succeeding to the interest thereof, by whatsoever name known and in honor of/memory of ______________________________."

2) Revocable Trust

A sum of money, stocks, etc. is assigned to a trust in the name of Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME. The Donor retains ownership of the trust and may receive the interest income from the principal of the trust for her/his lifetime. The donor may cancel the trust or change the designee of the trust at any time. At the Donor's death, the principal of the trust is transferred to Catherine McAuley High School if the school is still the trust designee.

3) Charitable Remainder Trust

A sum of money, stocks, etc. is assigned to a trust in the name of Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME During the Donor's lifetime, the Donor may receive a percentage of the interest earned by the trust's principal. The Donor may not revoke this trust nor change it. At the donor's death, the principal of the trust is transferred to Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME.

4) Life Estate Contract

An agreement is made between the Donor and Catherine McAuley High School of Portland, ME in which the Donor deeds a home or a farm to the charity but reserves the right to use or reside on the property for life.

5) Life Insurance

The Donor transfers the ownership of the policy to the charity.

6) Charitable Lead Trust

A sum of money is set aside in a trust to pay income to Catherine McAuley High School, Portland, ME for a predetermined period of time. After the allotted time ends, the income to Catherine McAuley High School ceases and the trust principal is returned to the Donor.
