Welcome Chilean StudentsMcAuley is hosting a fourth year of an Academic Foreign Exchange with a High School from Santiago de Chile: Colegio Juanita de los Andes. While at McAuley, the Chilean girls have their own schedules and attend school as part of the student body. The immersion helps them greatly improve their English and understand the United States culture. They, in turn, enrich our student body with their experiences and PowerPoint presentations about their country and culture. Friends are made all around. There are six girls living with host families at McAuley. Host families and Mrs. Dubreuil arrange a variety of activities and field trips for the students including City Tours of Portland, ski trip to Sugarloaf, a lobster dinner and trips to other Maine sites. It is a wonderful enriching experience for all involved, and life-changing for many. Please contact Mrs. Dubreuil if you have any questions or comments.

McAuley’s Second Annual Run for Hope

March 1, 2008 – 6:43 pm

Saturday, May 10th, Catherine McAuley will be hosting the second James & Maxine Pouravelis Scholarship Fund Race/Run. The fund was established in December of 2006 in memory of two devoted and vibrant members of the Catherine McAuley community. Jim and Maxine lived each day with an unending and unwavering spirit of hope and optimism. Although they embodied this hope through their generous contributions to countless communities, they had a special affection for the McAuley community that nurtured their two daughters and provided them with a superb educational and spiritual foundation. In life, James and Maxine cheered loudly, danced often, and loved immensely. They passed away within two months of each other in the summer of 2006. Even in sickness, with a powerful faith and steadfast love of family and friends, they remained sure and firm in their hope. The James and Maxine Pouravelis Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance to young women seeking an education at Catherine McAuley High School; an education James and Maxine saw as essential to the intellectual, athletic, and spiritual development of young women. Through the hope that is nurtured by a McAuley education, this scholarship will continue to keep alive their hope in new beginnings. For questions or to register please contact McAuley5k@yahoo.com.

McAuley Swim Team State Champions!

February 20, 2008 – 6:36 pm

McAuley Swim Team State Champions!BRUNSWICK- With favored Falmouth in trouble, McAuley and Greely jumped into the battle for the state Class B girls´ swimming and diving championships Tuesday night at Bowdoin College´s Greason Pool. McAuley won, beating the Rangers by five points. The meet was not decided until the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Falmouth was leading before the race but could only watch because its relay team was disqualified with a false start in the preliminaries. McAuley trailed Greely by one point before easily winning the 400 relay to finish with 273 points. It was the first title for the Lions since consecutive championships in 2001 and ´02, and it also ended Falmouth´s four-year reign. Junior Kristen Desrosiers led McAuley, defending her individual titles in the 200 freestyle (1:59.02) and 500 freestyle (5:23.25). In the 500 freestyle consolation race, McAuley freshman Aoife Ryle shaved 18 seconds off her best time and won, taking ninth place overall. She entered with the 14th-best time, and the difference between ninth place and 14th is six points. “That really brought some points,” McAuley Coach John Smith said. “That was just a huge turnaround for the team. Everyone got real excited after that.” McAuley earlier showed depth in the 200 freestyle with a 1-2 finish by Desrosiers and senior Hannah Gajewski The lead bounced back and forth. The Lions — on Desrosiers´ win, Gajewski´s fourth and Ryle´s ninth in the 500 freestyle — closed within a point of Greely. The McAuley relay team of Desrosiers, Gajewski, Gaby Cloutier and Katelyn Desrosiers won in 3:50.18, four seconds ahead of Greely. In addition to winning the State Championship the Lions were given the Sportsmanship Award. Way to go Ladies! (Press Herald)

McAuley Announces Finalist in the 2008 National Merit Scholarships

February 11, 2008 – 6:34 pm

Catherine McAuley High School is proud to announce that Rebecca Weidler of Portland has been named a Finalist in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced in September by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship® awards, worth $34 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling several requirements. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar® title. NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Program. Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by NMSC’s own funds and by approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence. More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2008 National Merit Program by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the studentÂ’s earlier qualifying test performance.

McAuley Students give the Gift of Hope

November 11, 2007 – 7:31 pm

Hand Crafting Justice is a project developed by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. Recently, the students of Catherine McAuley volunteered their time and talents to help set up a fair trade marketplace at St Maximilian Kolbe. Authentic crafts were made by women in developing countries and sold to help break the cycle of poverty. The money spent on these products provide women in developing countries with hope and the economic, educational, health, and spiritual assistance that can transform their lives.
