Author Lyn Mikel Brown Visits Catherine McAuley High School
September 19, 2008 – 7:45 pmLyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D., co-author of Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters from Marketers’ Schemes, visited Catherine McAuley High School on Thursday, September 18, to discuss her research on girls’ development and the media with the School community. Brown asserts that the images projected on the big screen and television programs, and in newspapers and magazines, affect young women in today’s society. Brown’s visit was an appropriate one, as the entire student body and faculty partook in a community-wide read of the book over the summer.
In addition to her role as a professor of education at Colby College, Brown is also the author of other books on girls’ development – Meeting at the Crossroads: Women’s Psychology and Girls’ Development (with Carol Gilligan). She also creates programs for the nonprofit Hardy Girls Healthy Women, an organization in support of girls’ healthy development and education.
