Two McAuley Seniors Vie for Spot in Senate Youth Program
October 23, 2008 – 6:26 pm http://www.mcauleyhs.org/images/PDF_Icon.gifCongratulations to McAuley standouts Meghan Nee and Madeleine Brodeur, the two top scorers on the U.S. Senate Youth Program qualifying test sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
Nee and Brodeur, both seniors, took the test that covered phases of the U.S. government, the U.S. Constitution, and current political issues. In addition to taking the test, selected candidates must have been elected to either a student government or class officer post for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Both students will now be eligible for consideration for the next round of competition in Augusta on November 19. If selected to represent the state of Maine, the two will travel to Washington, D.C. in March 2009 for the 47th Annual United States Senate Youth Program and receive a $5,000 scholarship to help fund their undergraduate education.
The United States Senate Youth Program is “a national initiative to provide a yearly opportunity for talented young people with demonstrated leadership abilities to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes and encourage them to consider careers in public service.”
In last year’s Senate Youth Program, Monike Santana ‘08 was one of two students to represent the state of Maine at the national level.
