Catherine McAuley High School is pleased to announce that junior Samantha Dedian of Scarborough recently garnered second place in the 2009 Woman’s Literary Union (WLU) Youth Council Writing Contest with her poetry entry entitled, Echoing Tears.

Dedian competed against students from ten area high schools in a writing competition that echoed the year’s theme – “Dependence vs. Independence”. Judging was based on topic development, the incorporation of details, examples, explanation and evidence, originality of thought, insight, perspective, quality of writing voice, organization, and attention to grammar and mechanics.

The Woman’s Literary Union, which is based in Portland, has been celebrated for its commitment to literature, arts, genealogy, antiques, and travel since 1889. The Union is also dedicated to community and educational enrichment opportunities, awarding several college scholarships to deserving students each year.

For her accomplishment, Dedian obtained a $300 cash prize.
