Looking for a Unique Volunteer Opportunity?

Dear Students, Parents and Friends of McAuley,

Are you looking for a unique and rewarding experience? If so, such an experience awaits you at the Good Cause Thrift Shop.

Since its inception in 1994, the Good Cause Thrift Shop has provided clean, usable clothing, household furnishings and other commodities at affordable prices to people in the Greater Portland area.  And, perhaps of special note to members of the McAuley family, all proceeds from Good Cause benefit Catherine McAuley High School’s Student Financial Aid Program.

Your volunteer assistance is needed in order to allow the Shop, and the young women of McAuley High School, to thrive.  The need for volunteers is greater than ever, due to the increase in the volume of donations.  Consider giving a couple of hours a month to a most worthy cause.

Although volunteers are accepted on all days and times, and in various capacities, help is needed during the days and hours checked off in the table below (There is a special need for assistance on Fridays and Saturdays.).

Here’s a little more about what Good Cause has to offer:

  • Each day, the staff and volunteers witness the satisfaction and pride on people’s faces as they find just the right garment for an upcoming job interview, wedding, funeral or just everyday wear.
  • Our customers represent a microcosm of the population at large.
  • All find in the Good Cause a haven providing solace, comfort, peace, hope, direction, information and help.
  • The Shop also responds to requests for help from a variety of social service agencies, hospitals and churches throughout Greater Portland.
  • Clothing, jewelry and materials for sets and props have enhanced drama club productions at Catherine McAuley, Deering, Waynflete and Westbrook High Schools, as well as professional theater.

In short, Good Cause:

  • Is recycling at its best
  • Provides an opportunity for those who are so abundantly blest to share their blessings and abundance with others
  • Financially strengthens the McAuley Student Financial Aid Program
  • Provides an opportunity for young women to have the McAuley experience
  • Provides a place for dedicated people to give of their time and talent to a very worthy cause

Catherine McAuley once said, “There are three things prized more than gold, though they cost the donor nothing: the kind word, the gentle compassionate look, the patient hearing of sorrows.”  Live the mission of Mother McAuley through a volunteer opportunity and experience the wonderful blessings that await at the Good Cause Thrift Shop.
