Smith College Club of Maine & McAuley to Host Screening of ‘Miss Representation’ Documentary
January 19, 2012 – 3:45 pm http://www.mcauleyhs.org/images/PDF_Icon.gifIn an effort to bring attention to the continuing pressures facing women and girls at the hands of the media, the Smith College Club of Maine is hosting a screening of the documentary film, Miss Representation, at 2pm on Sunday, January 29th at Catherine McAuley High School, 631 Stevens Ave., Portland. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Miss Representation is written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. The film had its broadcast premiere on OWN Oprah Winfrey Network on October 20, 2011.

Rebecca Rundquist ’89, who is spearheading this effort, was compelled to bring the documentary to Portland in an effort to provide the community with an opportunity for thoughtful discussion around issues concerning women/girls, sexuality, and the media. A panel and discussion will be held following the screening. Though the screening is being offered to students free of charge, a suggested donation of $5 is being collected.
