McAuley Junior Invited to Attend Prestigious Writer’s Conference

Catherine McAuley High School junior, Caitlyn Connolly, was recently chosen to attend the prestigious Middlebury College Writer’s Conference located in Middlebury,Vermont. The conference takes place at the Bread Loaf Campus, on the same grounds that famed poet Robert Frost once roamed. Frost encouraged the commencement of the Conference in 1926, and for 42 years he returned to this very same campus to instruct and share his poetic gifts.  From May 17 – 20, Caitlyn will participate in poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction workshops led by respected, published poets and writers.

 

Congratulations, Caitlyn! The McAuley community is very proud of this well-earned accomplishment!

Catherine McAuley Announces New National Honor Society Members

Catherine McAuley High School is proud to announce the following new members of the National Honor Society: Felicia Bridges, Natalie Brown, Taylor Church, Abbie Corbeau, Alexa Coulombe, Olivia Crozier, Elizabeth Gajewski, Cristina Leake, Molly Mack, Molly Miller, Kathleen Profenno, Delaney Regan, and Morgan Wheeler.

The National Honor Society recognizes outstanding high school students for their character, leadership, scholarship, and service. These young ladies join 18 other McAuley students who were inducted last year.

McAuley Senior Selected for Research Program at Roanoke College

McAuley senior Dannielle Allen was recently selected for the Undergraduate Research Assistant Program (URAP) at Roanoke College in Virginia, where she will work alongside Dr. Sarisky on a project titled, “Purine Biosynthesis of Archaea”.   Ms. Allen, one of only six freshmen chosen for this four-year program, will attend conferences, work in laboratories, and have her findings and work published along with Dr. Sarisky’s.  The McAuley community is very proud of Dannielle, and wishes her the best of luck at Roanoke in the fall!

McAuley Junior Chosen for Keller Bloom Program at Bigelow Laboratories for Ocean Sciences

Catherine McAuley High School junior, Taylor Church, has been selected as one of sixteen young adults from Maine to participate in the Keller Bloom program at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Studies in East Boothbay, Maine.  “Bloom,” an acronym for Bigelow Laboratory Orders of Magnitude, is a program designed to introduce students to the various types of research conducted at the Bigelow Laboratories. While at Bigelow, where the primary focus is to understand the processes that control the world’s oceans, Ms. Church will use the latest technology and state-of-the-art instruments to collect samples, take measurements, and analyze data. The program, which begins the week of May 20, will culminate in a research seminar where Taylor will present her findings to her peers and instructors.

The McAuley community would like to extend a sincere congratulations to Taylor on this considerable achievement! Good luck at Bigelow, Taylor!!

McAuley Senior Named Maine’s Most Distinguished Young Woman!

Catherine McAuley High School senior, Lulama Moyo Hawkes, was just named Maine’s Most Distinguished Young Woman. This national scholarship program recognizes leadership, talent, and service of young women. This summer, Ms. Hawkes will travel to Alabama where she will participate in the national competition for a $25,000 college scholarship. Lulu, who also won last year’s Maine Poetry Out Loud Competition, plans to attend Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in the fall.

Congratulations Lulu!  The McAuley community is so very proud of you!

McAuley Limelighters Win Regional One-Act Competition!

Congratulations to the McAuley Limelighters for being named Regional Champions at the 2012 One-Act Festival held this past weekend at Marshwood High School.  This win sends the Limelighters to the State Competition, to be held March 23 & 24 at Yarmouth High School.  The crew will perform their play, The Children’s Hour, by Lillian Hellman, at 8:00pm on Friday, the 23rd.

In addition to set design and all-ensemble commendations, additional honors were awarded to Julia Cornell ’14 and Lulu Hawkes ’12 for acting, and Ramona Hoershelmann ’15 for her original piano composition.

Best wishes to all of you as you represent McAuley next weekend!  Come and support CMHS drama!
